GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

Whether it is part of daily worship or in-class teaching, music is a part of Marden Lodge throughout the school year. Music can help to develop the skills, attitudes and attributes that can support learning in other national curriculum subjects. This includes listening skills, the ability to concentrate, creativity, intuition, sensitivity, perseverance, the ability to work in a group, self confidence and sensitivity towards others.

Music is taught so that children learn the sound and meaning of a piece of music while appreciating a variety of different styles.  Children will be able to explore and experiment, developing a love and appreciation for the subject. Teachers will assess children on their enthusiasm and participation during lessons.

At Marden Lodge, we follow The Charanga Musical School Scheme. The Scheme supports all the requirements of the national curriculum. The scheme provides an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning which our children really enjoy. The interrelated dimensions of music weave through the units to encourage the development and progression of musical skills as the learning progresses through listening and appraising, differing musical activities (including creating and exploring) and performing.

Each Unit of Work comprises the of strands of musical learning which correspond with the national curriculum for music:

  1. Listening and Appraising
  2. Musical Activities
    1. Warm-up Games
    2. Optional Flexible Games
    3. Singing
    4. Playing instruments
    5. Improvisation
    6. Composition
  3. Performing

We are also excited to have Surrey Arts Music teaching some of year groups over the year. In term 1 and 2, Year 5 will be learning the plastic trumpet. In term 3 and 4, Year 3 will be learning the ukele. Finally, to end the year, in terms 5 and 6, Year 1 will be learning the recorder.  Our aim is that over a child's time at Marden Lodge they will get high quality peripatetic teaching whilst introducing them to a range of new instruments.
