Art, Design and Technology

Art, Design and Technology is a vital part of the primary curriculum as it provides a means of expression for all children. Encouraging children to share and explore through Art and Design enables them to be creative while also learning key skills. Art and Design is a practical subject which stimulates creativity and imagination through the use of a wide range of materials. It is very effective as a cross-curricular link, adding to children’s experiences and depth of understanding in other areas of their  learning, from creating their own artwork and artefacts to the experience of museum and gallery trips

During art sessions, children have the opportunity to observe, discuss and create, there is also time for them to evaluate their own and other pupils’ work. Over the course of a year, at Marden Lodge we aim to develop children’s understanding of colour, form, texture, pattern and their ability to use materials and processes to communicate ideas, feelings and meanings.  We hope that children are able to identify and appreciate the work of other artists which reflect diversity while developing their awareness that the process of creating art is equally as valuable as the finished product. Children create individually, in partners and collaboratively and they sculpt, collage, draw - using a wide range of media - or paint with poster paints, watercolours, acrylics, fabric paints and much more!

All year groups participate in at least three DT projects per year. This includes modelling, wood work and food technology. Part of the DT process is to plan in detail, create and then carefully evaluate. Children are taught these across all year groups. DT helps to prepare children for the developing world and encourages them to become curious and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. We encourage our children to use their creativity skills when developing ideas, planning, making products and evaluating them, whilst enabling them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making.
